10-25-2016 – 4-speed shifter hump

So I was referencing the measurements of my manual 4-speed shifter hump I installed from here and realized I was off by about an inch and need to re-do my work.  Today was spent analyzing, measuring and planning next steps.  This is the piece that the shifter sticks through that I need to redo:

I re-attached the bracing and used an older console to cross-reference since I am wanting it to be as close to the stock location as possible and will be using a similar console:img_2277

I am actually impressed that I got it this close on my first try, but referencing the picture and measurements in the above link, I need to adjust the location which will mean cutting it out, patching part of the hole, and re-attaching a new shifter-hump.img_2278

I have accumulated some donor parts.  Not the top piece in brown is the original section I cut out the first time (on the blue piece):img_2279

Unfortunately, the brace is closer than I would like – this piece looks to be from a firebird, but close enough…  (on a Camaro, the brace is further back by comparing to my patch panel)img_2280

After some thinking and experimenting and a failed attempt to remove the brace, I ended up cutting it as close to the brace as possible:img_2281

Using my other donor piece as a mold, the larger piece I will be working with appears to be flexible enough that I might be able to use it as a patch piece with a little persuasion…img_2282

More to come…  Stay tuned for more…

  1. Hey Doug, how did you measure the area. If so, I just converted from Auto to Manual and I have a hole cut, but I haven’t yet installed the hump. If you have the measurements, could you please send them to me.

  2. Hey Doug –
In the write up you mentioned “realized I was off by about an inch”, does this mean that you made an error in measuring and cutting or that the measurements in the link are not correct?

I will soon be making the conversion to a 4-spd floor shifter and would rather not follow your path exactly.

Could you provide installed dimensions of your hump say with diagonal measurements from the sill-plate mounting screw holes to the shifter boot holes on each side of the car?

Also, I will be installing a console in a non-console car. Can you provide similar locating dimensions for each of the two tunnel brackets?

    1. I meant my placement was off after re-measuring and comparing to the measurements in the link. To expand on what I did, I used the 3M metal bonding. I measured and cut-out, but when I went to bond it, I used self-tapping sheet metal screws which threw it out of the original measurements. What I am in the process of doing now, is using rivets (and 3M bonding). This will allow me to get it in place and adjust or re-adjust by drilling out rivets if needed and re-doing. Once I have it all in place, I will do the 3M bonding using the existing holes for the rivets. If you are welding, I suggest tacking it in place, re-measuring, then completing the weld. I am also using the console as a double-check for my placement as I want as close to the factory location as possible. I will try to get your measurements this weekend and place in a new blog post with pics.
